* When shopping for offers, you can pretty much ignore all the ones that are "spend gold in (x) days" or "get (10k+) points on dealer", UNLESS it's a very long time window (60-90 days). Definitely ignore the "rush" ones of this nature, at minimum it will require playing the game grinding 24/7 basically, and probably will still require spending too much real money to boot.
* You want to focus on "daily quest" and "gold spent" count goals, ideally with a nice long time window of 90 days. These are by far the most realistic to achieve with free play.
* When you play matches, don't always focus on being #1 overall. Just play well enough in the simpler opening rounds to get into the Elite Eight of each match while contributing to whatever your current Daily Quest needs are. If you can't contribute to Daily Quests anymore at that point, sell all your units but one and get bounced as fast as possible intentionally. Or if you've accidentally built up a good team and the competition is weak, just do minimal effort each turn and let things play out, sometimes you get a surprise #1 or #2 placement despite playing semi-brainlessly and minimizing cognitive load/time spent deliberating.
* Also focus on unlocking and playing as new Dealers, at least until they get into the Silver ranks somewhere and the quality of competition goes way up. Aside from weaker competition there are other benefits to this. You get more bonuses from their rank upgrades, and you get an instant profit of 550 gems just for spending the 100 to unlock a new one (via the automatic Bronze Rank IV bonus you collect right away as soon as they become available). Don't worry about unlocking Spells at Silver II if things are otherwise going slow, they really don't matter for this purpose.
* You auto-regenerate a new Daily Quest every three hours, but can also refresh two of them (one via ad watch, one via spending 80 gems) once every 24 hours. Creating a total of 10 per day, which is fixed, no way to "pay to win" (as of this writing) to increase this. So for this strategy, checking in and playing a couple matches once roughly every 12 hours is optimal.
* As far as spending gold goes there are also some timed things to keep on top of collecting:
- Sign up for the Gear Games club thing that has you go to their website (with a separate email signup) and collect 100 gold and another bonus once every 24 hours, they also have a "bonus track" there where you get additional bonuses (including gold) over time
- Free 50 gold per 24 hours in the in-game shop
- Watch up to five ads once per 24 hours, with a 30 min cooldown between each, the first three get you a cumulative total of 100 gold. The fifth one gets you gems, which indirectly become gold (either by buying an additional daily quest or exchanging for giant chests)
- If you haven't already don't miss the one-time gold bonuses under the Settings menu for clicking the links to the Facebook, Discord and Wiki pages (you don't have to sign up or do anything else). This should fetch 900 gold total
- Occasional holiday or special event bonuses. For example December has an advent calendar that runs for about two weeks with a daily gift, most of the gold found here is just like 50 per day, but logging in on Christmas Day brought a gift of 2000 gold
* What are "giant chests" anyway? Click on the "chest" icon in the shop to go right to them. Each one gives you 600 to 800 gold and 50 unit improvement shards for the cost of 2000 gems. A type that gives 50 random shards is always available, but every 24 hours two chests that have 50 shards from one particular faction are available for the same price and conventional wisdom is it's best to wait for these to appear for good factions that you like playing as.
* One very big one-time haul of gold comes from leveling the "featured dealer" of the current season. Each season runs just a tad shy of two months, starting in early January. A new dealer is introduced for each of these seasons and every time you reach a new Silver, Gold etc. ranking with them you get a bonus haul of gems and other rewards in addition to the normal reward. However, these bonuses are not collected until the season ends, then you get them all in a lump. Realistically you can get around 15k additional gems for this end of season, which (via giant chests) can be turned into around 5000 gold. The way to max this for GPT sites is to play a 90-day gold spending offer and start with somewhere under 30 days left to the end of the current season, but still enough time to level the current dealer enough to get their bonuses. Leaving you the full 60 days to level the next season's dealer if so desired. However, even with this full bonus it's not realistic to spend beyond 100k gold in 90 days with strictly F2P.
* Clans probably aren't worth wasting any time on for this purpose. Unlike other games, they are NOT newbie-friendly. A bunch say "all are welcome" or something like that but will then immediately kick you. Clan sizes are small in this game and they're usually focused on regular and active competing.
* You CAN get some additional gold from your Arena defenses ... but it's thin, unreliable, and may require a lot of grinding up good teams just to come up with like 10 or 20 added gold per 12 or 24 hours. Don't stress about grinding gold from defenses. In general the Arena is only good for hitting the weekly bonus goals, which you progress toward whether you win or lose each match. So if you have "Arena Points" don't be afraid to just field a crummy team against a strong one and lose on purpose. Do this each week until you hit 60 matches then stop until the week refreshes; this should take 5-6 days if you don't watch ads for bonus matches or maybe 3-4 days if you do.
* One last source of gold to consider: purchasing giant chests via gems (briefly touched on earlier). The general conventional wisdom is to use your gems for this anyway, to get shards to upgrade the best factions (for quick and simple play with a good chance to win I would consider these Aztec Gnomes and Dragons as of this writing), but you also get the bonus of 600 to 800 gold (randomly awarded) for each chest purchase. This is one somewhat "grindable" avenue as you get gems from bringing each dealer up through the Silver, Gold etc. ranks and you can simply play as many matches as you want until you accrue enough points to rank up. But it will take a ton of time and there is an eventual cap on each dealer's rankings.
